For a first visit, the 3-day city route is the best starting point. It focuses on Chongqing's cyberpunk icons, hotpot and a Two Rivers night cruise at a relaxed pace, which is plenty for a strong first impression. If you have longer and want variety, extend to five days for Wulong nature or four days for the calmer Dazu heritage day.
Yes, the routes are built to extend. Wulong Karst adds karst bridges, caves and mountain air; Dazu Rock Carvings adds a UNESCO heritage day; and Zhangjiajie, connected by high-speed rail, adds the Avatar-style sandstone pillars. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, with mild weather for walking the hilly city and comfortable conditions in Wulong. Summers are hot and humid, and winter is cool and occasionally misty, which can add atmosphere to the karst scenery. The famous neon night views look striking year-round, so no season is a wrong choice.
